Otto Share Debut EP ‘Still Picture You’

Detroit pop act Otto have shared their debut EP Still Picture You. Formed in a 9×9 studio-slash-bedroom in Detroit, the band’s songwriting style is infectious yet unflinchingly heartfelt, making for a memorable and emotive listening experience. Their latest EP Still Picture You was written virtually, growing up over the airwaves in online songwriting sessions in the winter of 2020. The first time the band members were all in the same room at the same time wasn’t until March the next year, to record their project in Nashville, TN. The resulting collection of songs follows the creative evolution of the band’s personality and individual influences over the year they spent getting to know each other virtually, and brings together groovy, rhythmic guitar riffs, anthemic arpeggiation, and a Tears-For-Fears-esque nostalgia for an electronic synth.

Across the set of 5 tracks, the band experiments with vibrant, soaring synth textures that make for character-rich and poignant tracks. Drawing influence from a variety of genres including synth pop, indie pop, and electronic, they present a diverse and dynamic offering that lacks many dull moments. Songs like “When I Really Saw You” are sonically bright and colorful, whereas tracks like “Shes Like A (Ghost)” introduce a darker, more ruminative mood, making for an engaging ride of highs and lows across the EP. Closer “If You Know” provides a project highlight, bringing in expansive, celestial synths and soaring guitars to make for a grand exit.

The latest from Detroit’s Otto, Still Picture You‘s features an infectious 80’s-influenced synth pop sound and focused, emotive songwriting. Featuring sharply-crafted and energetic instrumentation that underscores the EP’s candid lyricism, it remains evocative and honest throughout.
